Automatic gearbox makes rattling sound in Neutral & Park

We have a 1998 Honda Shuttle 2.3 VTEC (7-seat), which is the UK variant of the Mk1 Odyssey (mechanically very similar to the late-90s Accord, I am told).
Its engine number is F23A7 1007106 and the automatic transmission number is MDWA 1028889. I don't know if they are the originals that were fitted in the factory.
The gearbox makes a gentle rattling sound in Neutral & Park, but makes no noise as soon as any of the driving gears have been engaged (either moving or stationary). It operates correctly as far as I know - except I would perhaps like the kickdown to be a bit more responsive.
Does the rattle in Neutral & Park mean the whole box is likely to fail soon - or is it more probably just an annoyance to be ignored? I first noticed it happening maybe 2000 miles ago.
If it is likely to fail, would these symptoms mean it is more likely to fail by seizing up, or just by losing any power to the wheels?
Would you risk a 1000-mile round trip away from home with these symptoms?

look the simple solution to any auto tranny problem is not to get one in the first place, lol but serious it probally is just your fly wheel missing a tooth, if it takes alittle time to crank than that is a big possiblity. And if it is than I would take it on the trip, but you should never just annore a sound or smell on your car cause it could lead to worse things, like blow out on the highway next to a transfer truck at 90mph like me....

I have a 98 Japan Odyssey/Shuttle with the same symptoms.
Running perfectly expect a "whirring" noise in neutral or park.
As it's running and starting fine the fly wheel suggestion doesn't fit.
The tranny fluid is clear and filled correctly
Any suggestions (apart from scrapping it) welcome!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem (rattling when in neutral or parking) but on my 97 Prelude 2.0I. First noticed about two months ago and it got louder now. Really dissapointed as wanted to sell it soon and now its not looking good. Any suggestions please? Many thanks
