i just got an 83 accord hatchback in mostly excellent condition. it's got less than 130000 miles on it, and the engine works splendidly (but the carb is a little temperamental sometimes). and there's a few things that I want to fix on it, and I was hoping someone might have some hints or links to people that offer the things I need, since I don't know a whole ton about this sort of stuff.
1. exhaust system has a giant hole right after the catalytic converter. this one's simple to fix, i've found a pretty nice shop with some cool guys locally. they should be able to help me out on this.
2. bumpers are dinged badly. the woman who had this before me mashed into some stuff apparently... will replace these from pick-n-pulls nearby.
3. all rubber seals around windows and behind the trim are crap and falling off or falling apart. where do i get replacement weather seals for the front windows? both passenger and driver-side windows rubber is coming off (the stuff that the window actually rolls up into when closed). the actual door weatherstripping is fine, but the window stuff is falling apart. ALSO, whenever I roll the driver's side window up, it pukes out some fabric-y black stuff from the front of the window, right next to the mirror. it comes apart real easy and leaves a mess every time i roll the window up, what is this stuff? can i get that replaced? where would i buy it?
4. hatch support struts are dead. simple replacement from pick-n-pull or purchased new.
5. body trim issues there's little caps on the door and side trim at the back and front that have fallen off. i'll be looking at the pick-n-pull for them of course, but if anybody knows where i could get these online or something that'd be great.
6. triangle window trim rubber seals falling out. similar to the front window issues, except these are thin rubber bits under the metal trim.
AND NOW, for things I want to do to it:
1. Manual conversion. it's an automatic transmission and this car would be a crapload more fun with a manual. i'm sure i can find thr same model's tranny intact somewhere, but what exactly do i need to do with this car to switch?
2. potential engine upgrade. now, i've read that 83 was the last year for honda to use these specific engine mounts, so if i changed it to anything else it would have to have the mounts custom fabricated, that's fine. but I know with the 83 accord the engine is sitting right on top of the transmission, so i'd probably have to replace both at once. so, what honda engines are in a similar configuration, that i could just drop them in on the custom mounts? remember the 83 accord is carbeurated. if i could get something with even just like 100-140 hp, that would scream in a car this light. so ANY advice would be appreciated on this, since i don't know anything about engine swaps at all...
3. intake replacement now obviously this idea changes if i get the engine replaced, but until then: currently the intake pipe is a stubby thing that is only like 5 inches from the engine. what aftermarket pipes will work with this model's setup? keep in mind the carb is right under the current air filter element (one of the round ones), so unless there's something that has the cone filter on the end and also has the parts to pop onto the carb, it would probably just have to be a pipe with no filter on the end, unless having 2 filters isn't a big deal - it just seems like it would slow the air down too much.
4. rally-inspired sport suspension now, i really dig this car, but i wanna keep it away from the ricer image. i can envision it as something kinda like a lancia delta, a hot hatchback with the same agressive stance. so i would like to raise it up, only like an inch, but add a bit of forward rake to it, raising the back wheels only, or just more than the front to get it angled down like that. it doesn't have to be far at all, just subtle is good. i also wanna keep the body roll to a minimum, so stiffer would be better, i think. i like that when i go around a corner right now, the body hardly even moves at all, and i can really feel the road. any advice on brands to go for, or things to remember?
5. new wheels and tires of course. does anybody know brands that have a nice rally look to them? the steelies on the car currently are pretty neat, i have to say. but something a little less... rusty-looking would be nicer, lol! i'm thinking 15 inch wheels at max. again, i don't want it to look "ricer", plus giant wheels and rubberband tires would look silly with a rally suspension. so, any leads on particular wheels that would look nice in this way?
thanks a ton! i love this car's styling and i also love that i don't see them around anywhere as i'm driving. it's nice to have something a little bit uncommon. ;P
happy driving!
