i would like to import and ek9 type r but i can't find any info anywhere as to how.  everyone seems to say the best way is to import it yourself.  ok... HOW?  from what i've read you either have to ship it over in peices and lisense it as a gray market kit car or you have to provide crash test data to the american government.  i don't want to do either of these because both require disassembling the car in one way or another.  is there a LEGAL way to get a legitimate EK9 type r to the states in one peice?  obviously there is, as there was an article in HT about someone who did it but i can't seem to find specific info on how to do it.  any help would be much appreciated.

Bringing the car over isn't the hard part.  It's getting it registered here and keeping that is.  If you want to import a car to the US and have it registered it needs to pass DMV and DOT safety standards that is why they need crash test data.  Since they did sell EKs in the US, you can try to give them crash test data for a USDM EK and say that since they're so similar the crash data is the same.  However you can't just say the only difference is that the steering wheel is on the other side.  You really need to go through the specs on the car piece by piece to prove that they are structurally the same and will perform the same in crash testing.  You also need to make sure the car meets the emission standards of the state you live in, otherwise the DMV won't let you register it till it does.  Make sure you do all this before you even try to get the car shipped or customs will seize it the second it hits stateside, and if that happens you need to work fast to get it back otherwise they will crush it at your expense.  Also even if you do get lucky and manage to get the car and keep it, the DOT and DMV might only allow you to register it for off-road/show use only which means you'll need to watch the odometer cause you can only put so many miles a year on it.
